A DR solution that is labeled as being hardware-agnostic means that it is capable of replicating data from one type of hardware environment to almost any other kind of environment, as long as their hypervisors are compatible.

Using a hardware-agnostic solution for DR offers a few key benefits over using a solution that relies on proprietary hardware to perform disaster recovery.

First, the use of an agnostic solution allows companies to freely replicate their environments to a DR Target site as long as the underlying hypervisors are compatible.

Second, the use of an agnostic solution allows companies to choose a target environment to another customer-owned data center or a Cloud service provider that specializes in DR.

Finally, hardware agnostic disaster recovery reduces the operational complexity of DR, making DR much simpler to manage, maintain & test.

Creating a Hardware-Agnostic DR Solution

Modern disaster recovery solutions can take advantage of virtualization to make backup and replication of computing environments that doesn’t rely on having a specific hardware/OS setup.

By leveraging virtualized infrastructures, disaster recovery solutions can eliminate hardware dependencies that would be inherent to more traditional, proprietary data backup solutions.

This is one reason why many modern DR setups are designed specifically to interface with virtualization software applications such as VMware. In these setups, the DR solution is usually set to replicate individual virtual machines (VMs) rather than entire physical servers.

Are There Limitations with Hardware-Agnostic DR?

As with any kind of system, there are a few key limitations present in a hardware-agnostic disaster recovery solution. While there are no specific hardware requirements for DR in a hardware-agnostic setup, there may be a requirement for a specific virtualization setup, such as VMware or Hyper-V to run the DR solution.

Premium cloud providers often use these virtualization solutions to maximize their hardware’s efficiency. So, if you’re on a premium cloud service, adding disaster recovery to your cloud environments is not as complex as adding disaster recovery to non-virtualized environments.
